Frans Lanting’s book Eye to Eye is not just a collection of images culled from 20 years spent photographing wildlife--it is a deeply personal statement about how he views both the animal kingdom and his own work.

“I didn’t want to do a classic retrospective, because it’s something you do when you have nothing else to say,” says Lanting. “Instead, I looked at ways to put together a personal philosophy in the form of an extended photo essay.”

The book, is divided into three sections which Lanting compares to a musical score. “I really see the book more as the equivalent of a musical piece--a symphony where the images flow into one another,” he says.

In the opening section, “One On One,” Lanting presents intense close ups of individual animals to show them as individuals with attitudes. In “Two By Two,” animals come together and react to each other. And in “All In All,” Lanting shows us how individual animals exist in their own animal societies.
