PDN: Can you tell us what the next book is about?
JOYCE TENNESON: I think whatever project I'm working on is the most exciting
one I've ever done, but with this next one, I'm doing it on women from age 70
to 100. And I've loved working with them so much. They've been fascinating. They're
from all walks of life, and it's been, I don't know, perhaps my most satisfying
series. And with it, I think I've finished the life cycle, in a way. Who knows
what I'll do after that? I think it will be very different. It will be a time
of real unknown when I finish this, because I will have, in my own mind, finished
investigating the lifecycle of the female psyche, at least as much as I'm able
to deal with it at this moment.
PDN: In your recent celebrity work, are there one or two specific images you can
talk a little bit about?

Odetta |
JOYCE TENNESON: I have had the pleasure of working with quite
a few celebrities. Recently, I worked with the wonderful singer, Odetta, whom
I photographed with her guitar. I was very pleased with the work. . . I just felt
so close to her after we had finished, and I felt that she was such a deep and
wonderful person, especially the way she treated everybody around her in the studio.
Often times you get people that treat assistants with almost a disdain or non-interest,
but Odetta seemed genuinely interested in everyone. And in her own way, she's
an incredible warrior. I really admire her on both a professional and spiritual
level.
