In the Nineties, after decades of documenting harsh realities and painful memories in American history, Parks turned his camera on his own imagination. The result is a compilation of dreamlike, abstract color images. . .painterly landscapes, mottled backdrops and leaves that seem to take on various aspects of the human form.
The image shown here was created from a leaf that fell off a tree in Parks's living room. He picked it up and says that suddenly it took on the persona of woman holding a child. "It had so much life.... If I hadn't been a fashion photographer, I don't think I would have recognized the flow and movement. But it was Jimmy Galanos all over again."
