Rodney Smith Image of Grace

Because he works only by existing natural light, much of Smith's architectural work is done by necessity in Europe, where he says architectural modernism hasn't obliterated sunlight.

Says Smith: "Most buildings in Europe have floor-to-ceiling windows and they haven't tinted the glass. There is a tremendous amount of sunlight which comes into them which is perfect for my way of shooting. You go to New York City where they are trying to keep the sun out of the building and use small scale windows. It's sort of the antithesis of what I'm about."
