One somewhat obvious dichotomy exists between the way that Smith approaches his fashion work--his impromptu style of shooting with a 35 mm Leica--and his desire to create images of almost formal beauty. His shoots, he says, are almost entirely unplanned and most of what happens is a spontaneous interaction between models and their surroundings. It's a style of shooting that he says tends to make art directors a bit nervous.

"The art directors definitely aren't used to it," he says. "The models aren't either but they get it. I think everyone sort of gets it ultimately. The art directors at first are a little bit terrified that they don't have that much control over the pictures or me. But then they sort of sit back and relax and have a good time because there is not much to be done about it."
