Rodney Smith Image of Grace

Unlike a lot of fashion photographers who work in studios, or in complex technical environments with banks of lights and an entourage of assistants swarming around the models, Smith prefers to work in a minimalist, almost casual, way: he shoots only in natural light and mainly with 35 mm Leica cameras. Even more surprising, he rarely carries more than a few rolls of film to a shoot and never-never-shoots a Polaroid.

"I never shoot a Polaroid-ever. I've never shot a Polaroid. Taking a Polaroid or doing anything like that removes the entire spontaneity for me- If I take the Polaroid, I just hand it to the art director and say, 'That is your picture.'"
