Not all of Kirkland's celebrities come from Hollywood, in fact, many of his subjects are luminaries in the art world -- including other photographers. This portrait of Dada movement founder Man Ray is one of his favorites:
"I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to even be around Man Ray. This is a guy whose career goes back to the twenties, the thirties -- he was there and in the center of all this creativity. He's not just a photographer. He's a sculptor, a painter, and a genius. I was so glad to have had an opportunity to put my lens at him. He's been dead many years. I was so lucky in the early 70's to have this chance to be with him."
