According to Kirkland if there is one key to getting a lot of good shots from a limited amount of time, it's being prepared -- having ideas at the ready. In photographing French actress Isabelle Huppert, Kirkland not only had several shots planned, but was also ready to improvise.
"I worked one day with her, but what a day," he recalls. "I got more great images in one day than almost any shoot I can ever remember doing. She was ready for it. We had different things for her to wear...I even photographed her at lunchtime because I saw something good in the available light. And it ended up being still another image."
