While Kirkland almost always carries on conversations with his subjects while he's photographing them, occasionally he runs into the obvious problem: a language barrier. In photographing Chinese movie star Gong Li, neither spoke the other's language -- but it didn't stop the photographer from conversing freely.

He often offers this advice to students who run into similar problems: "Say it your way in English and put your heart and soul into it. And that transcends language. People understand even if they speak only Chinese and none of the language you speak. If you tell them with passion what you want they will understand. That's how you make pictures."

In fact, says Kirkland, the bond was so tight that he and Li embraced at the end of the shoot. "We knew we had made great pictures," he says.
