|Shortly after leaving his staff job at Life in 1998, Joe McNally
got another one of those "once-in-a-lifetime" assignments: National
Geographic asked him to cover John Glenn's return to space.
"I had literally just walked out the door at Life Magazine ...
and the National Geographic called me and said that they would
like me to go down to Houston and start photographing John Glenn,"
he recalls. "That was on a Wednesday and they said 'Can you be
there the following Monday?' I said, 'Yeah, fine, okay, let's
do it.' It's not the type of thing you say no to."
