Of course, not all of McNally's Life assignments were so emotionally charged -- many, in fact, have been downright fun. One assignment that he particularly liked was photographing members of the United States Olympic team in the nude.

"I wanted to do something different," he recalls. "I said I really wanted to photograph these people's bodies. Not for erotic content, but to show how the idea of an Olympian connotes not only athletic ability but incorporates a lot of our ideas of what ideal beauty is."

Needless to say, the idea took some persuasion, both with editors and the athletes, says McNally. "My editor looked at me and said 'You can talk these people into doing that?' I said 'I think so.' And he said, 'Alright, go ahead and do it.'"

The series turned out so successful that Life ended up running four different covers for that issue.
