If there is any hallmark of Joe McNally's approach to photojournalism, it is that he is extremely prepared and thorough. In fact, he says, the possibility that he might overlook a potential shot is a constant, almost haunting, concern:

"It makes asking the tough questions easier because it's a really long plane ride home when you feel you haven't completely pushed the envelope or the job in the way that you should," he says. "It makes it easier to ask the subject for whatever you might be reticent about asking. Can we do this? Can I have more time? Will you come with me here? What is this?"
