Fifteen years ago, after more than a decade of making award-winning images for advertising clients, the idea for "Last Places on Earth," was born. "I can't say where the idea began exactly," says Meola. "I think it was in Burma." It was the photographer's hunger for travel and his ambition for exploring new places--to say nothing of his experience of seeing so many primeval and uncharted places disappear--that inspired the project. Thus far, he's been to Burma, Laos, India, China, Nepal, South Africa, Egypt, Tibet, Sulawesi (Indonesia), and the South Pacific, and plans are currently in the works for visiting Borneo, the Amazon, and Costa Rica. After that, who knows? Several years ago, Kodak Professional threw its support behind Last Places On Earth and Meola began to cut back on his advertising assignments to devote more time to it. A traveling exhibition is slated to begin this summer and he plans on publishing a book as well. "All the photography for the book will be completed by this summer," he says, which he hopes will be published by late 2000. But, he's quick to add, the publication date won't mean the end of the project. "Even after the book is published, I will still take one trip a year and keep adding to it," he says. And so, PDN and Kodak Professional are proud to present the most recent stage of Meola's odyssey through the Last Places On Earth. . . .
