I've wanted to do something in the subway for years. The graphic qualities along with its very recognizable, almost iconic trains and corridors make the perfect backdrop for a great fashion story. Tara Monaghan, the stylist on this shoot, and I delved into the subway together and figured out individual shots. She knew exactly what I was looking for in each photograph and put together the perfect wardrobe. It is very challenging to match the ambient lighting of the subway with the model in the studio. Doing the two shots separately was the only way to achieve the results I was looking for, as the remote and dangerous location would have made almost all of the shots impossible. Since this was a self-produced and financed story for the purposes of self-promotion, budget was a real hindrance. I could have pushed the story even further if I had the budget of a magazine to support the shoot.
Technically speaking, I just used the resources that I had available to me, which were essentially a camera (Canon EOS 1N) and a Macintosh computer (350/G3). I used Fuji film, Epson scanner and printer, Photoshop and Elinchrom lighting. |
