On the Road Again

West Africa Roseanne Pennella
"Eight years ago, I was miserable in a job that paid well but starved my soul, and I received my first camera -- a Nikon N90s -- as a Christmas gift. I instantly fell in love with photography. A few years later I quit my job as an attorney and with two N90s cameras and a bag of Nikkor lenses ranging from 20 to 200mm, I decided to pursue photography full time. The way I see it, changing careers to pursue photography, and ultimately the point of travel -- to see and experience the unknown, to go where it is not easy or safe -- represented a ledge in my psychic life; and I leapt without knowing where I would fall. And since that time when I left law six years ago, I have never looked back."

Rosanne Pennella has photographed the rainforest of Borneo, former headhunters of New Guinea, puja rituals on the Ganges River in India, cremation ceremonies in Bali, the mystical landscapes of China, villages in northern Thailand, tribal warriors in Kenya, as well as the cloud forest of Central America. Her work has been used by Nikon and Lowepro, and her clients include the China National Tourist Office, Costa Rica Tourism, Tourism Malaysia, the Moroccan National Tourist Office, Quark Expeditions, Fodor’s and Random House. Her work has won several awards including the 2001 PDN Annual and a Puffin Grant. An ongoing project for the Cambodia Trust has been sponsored by Kodak, Nikon and Lowepro. Rosanne teaches travel photography and is a mentor for the American Photo Mentor Series Workshops and also leads photo workshops on location. Her cibachrome images have been exhibited at museums and galleries throughout the country.
