Driving north through Burkina Faso, we crossed the border and arrived in Mali. In the late afternoon we approached Dogon territory and its isolated cliff top villages on the sandstone Bandiagara Escarpment. The animistic Dogon live among the steep cliffs and caves where they fled the Muslims hundreds of years ago. In the shadow of the escarpment, we camped in red sand dunes. The next day, I hiked up and over steep, rocky terrain to Gummu village and photographed the fetish house shown here with animal skins, bones, monkey and other animal skulls on a wall. Sitting in front of the fetish wall is the man responsible for its upkeep and making the necessary offerings. In a nearby village, one can see the formations of the multi-level cliff dwellings cut into the sandstone cliffs.
