Across the semi-arid grasslands on the border of Ghana and Burkina Faso, the Gurunsi live in fortified painted houses. These houses have beautiful abstract frescoes adorning the walls of the rounded mud dwellings. It is as though the inhabitants are living in large pieces of pottery. I camped on the roofs of these dwellings on a starry night with a nearly full moon, climbing up the log-like ladders outside each home. For this photograph, taken on the day I arrived here, I wanted to capture the village chief seated in front of one of the most important houses in the village. Using my N90s and a 20-35mm f/2.8 Zoom-Nikkor lens I took this environmental portrait in the late afternoon light. I wanted to make sure that I showed the painted house, as well as the notched ladder (the Y-shaped object, on the far left of the photo) which is used to reach the roof of the house.
