n olden days, the greatest warriors
in Japan were the Yabusame, the mounted-samurai archers. They could shoot arrows with extraordinary
accuracy from the backs of their galloping horses, and were expert swordsmen. Two teams of samurai-mounted
archers still practice weekly and compete in tournaments at Shinto shrines throughout the year. Riders
stand up on their stirrups to create an absolutely steady platform from which to shoot their longbows.
I earmarked the two best archers and then stood directly below the target and panned on a slow shutter
speed to create the feeling of speed and action. The continuous focus on my F100 had no trouble keeping
up with the moving target.
