Karbala, Iraq: An American soldier from a task force made
up of the 1-36 Infantry, 1-37 Armor and 16th Engineers
Battalion, raids a third mosque in the old city of Karbala.
The soldiers took defensive positions around the windows
of the building, hiding from sniper and RPG fire and keeping
away from the glass due to heavy and precise mortar fire.
Two RPGs, more than six rockets and small arms clips were
found. The mosque was later wired by EOD, or sappers, to blow it
up so it could not be used in the future.
Mosques, usually places of worship and protected by the Geneva Convention,
have become a favored spot for Muqtada Sadr’s militia since it
is illegal to attack them. |
