olando Garibotti tries to rappel down a steep gully in a fierce storm, retreating from a climbing attempt on Cerro Fitzroy , in the northern part of Los Glacieres National Park. This is one of the famous storms of the Patagonian Andes, which can pin climbers down in their tents for weeks at a time. These storms are one of the factors that make climbing in this area extremely challenging.

It is sometimes difficult in mountaineering to even take one's camera out, but these are often the most dramatic and interesting moments of the climb. What is essential is equipment that will take the challenge of cold, moisture, being banged around, and also being prepared. (Continued)

While retreating in a storm, I saw Rolando beseiged by snow slightly below me and whipped my F100 with a Nikkor 20-35mm lens out from beneath my jacket. The superior autofocus capabilities and metering system enabled me to shoot several frames with one hand while holding onto the rope with the other. Back
