enticular clouds glow pink and red over the
East Face of the Fitzroy massif. The
spectacularly shaped clouds are formed by
constant high winds and are one of the
defining elements of the Patagonian scenery;
sunrises and sunsets endure for many long
minutes, going through fantastic shifts of
colors and shapes. Cerro Fitzroy, called
"Chalten" by the Tehuelche Indians, is a huge
granite spire, (3441 meters) almost twice as
high as El Capitan in Yosemite and one of the
world's greatest mountaineering challenges.
