elderly woman of Yunnan Province, China, washes her bound feet in a clay pot in
a rare photograph of an unwrapped bound foot. The women of China suffered footbinding
for 1000 years before the practice was finally outlawed in 1957. Even husbands
rarely saw their wives' feet unwrapped, preferring to think of them as objects
