HELMUT NEWTON
photographed by Alice Springs, 1998
In America, Helmut Newton has always been a controversial and misunderstood figure - but his singular vision can not be refuted. He is a huge mentor to young European photographers who are open to his daring style. His portraits have not been seen by enough people in America. When I first saw a retrospective of his portraits in Europe, I realized what a great talent he is. I also find his relationship with his wife, photographer Alice Springs, one of the most complex and fascinating collaborations I've observed in the world of photography.
