DUANE MICHALS
self-portrait, March 2000
Duane Michals had, and continues to have, a significant influence on me, both esthetically and personally. I remember being very moved by some of his early work, which I found in a 1968 Museum of Modern Art exhibition catalogue titled Twelve Photographers of the American Social Landscape. Years later I met Duane when he came to lecture at the University of Las Vegas where I was teaching photography in 1976. We had a chance to walk through my exhibit at the school's gallery, and I will always remember his kind encouragement and support of my early photographs of toy soldiers for my book, Hitler Moves East. Only his openness and generosity to others exceed Duane's greatness as an artist.l
